Adam Mosseri unveils Instagram Edits app, positioned as a rival to recently banned CapCut. On January 20, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri announced the launch of the Edits app, which will be available from March 13th, 2025. The app will not be merely for editing, it will have an extensive toolset with the suggestion feature to enhance the video quality.

The app is specially designed for video creators to make their tasks easier. The announcement came after Capcut, a video-editing app was removed from the Apple Store on January 19. Bytedance-owned CapCut was banned with TikTok. Later, TikTok was restored, continuing the ban on video editing app, CapCut.
Instagram Edits App – CapCut’s Rival
On Sunday, Mosseri presented the new video editing app, Edits on social media platforms. He wrote, “ Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. A lot is going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”
Edits is more than just a video editing app; it’s a complete creative toolkit,” Mosseri said. It will have a tab for inspiration, another for tracking early ideas, a high-quality camera, all the editing features you’d expect, the option to share drafts with friends and creators, and — if you choose to share on Instagram — detailed insights into how your videos perform.
The app is now available for preorder on the iOS store and it will be soon available on Android devices. Mosseri mentioned that the app is more focused on the requirements of professional video creators rather than casual video makers.
Meta’s Expansion Strategies
Meta has always been opportunity-driven when it comes to launching new products and apps. They have one-of-a-kind expansion strategies. In June 2020, TikTok was banned in India after Meta introduced Insta Reels globally which became a major hit in India and other nations. Similarly, when Elon Musk took over Twitter(now named X) in July 2023, Meta released its own text-based social media platform, Thread. However, the text-based app doesn’t seem to be such a success but it surely attracted a large number of users who were looking for X’s alternatives.
Bytedance’s CapCut is banned in the US, opening the way for other companies to come up with alternatives. Meta has taken the opportunity and introduce its video editing app, Edits which will provide comprehensive tools and more features.
CapCut Ban Benefits Meta
Meta is positioning itself to fill the gap left by the ban of CapCut, providing video creators with an advanced suite of editing tools and a platform designed for both inspiration and professional quality. As Meta continues to seize opportunities created by shifts in the digital landscape, Edits is set to be a strong competitor in the video editing space, especially for creators looking for comprehensive tools and insights for their content.
