On October 9, Honda recalled 2 million vehicles due to a steering wheel issue. The recall will affect cars in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The company said that vehicles have been recalled over a manufacturing issue that has made the steering wheels difficult to move, a problem that could eventually lead to an accident.
Last week, the recall was reported to government regulators by the company officials. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the recall stating that the steering gearbox may not have been manufactured correctly, and this could potentially cause excessive internal friction. This friction in the steering could make it difficult to move smoothly and may cause accidents.

Problem with the Honda Steering Gearbox
In March 2023, NHTSA opened a probe to look into the steering gearbox issue, which was elevated to a full investigation by the end of the year. The drivers complained to the NHTSA about the sticky steering issues which generally occurred while driving on highways after some time. A few drivers also said that the issue occurred with low vehicle mileage.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stated that they received 13 reports of issue-related crashes while 11 drivers claimed that they lost control because of the extra effort required for the movement of steering while leaving the roadway.
Honda responded to the reports and said the problem stems from an improperly produced part that swells when exposed to environmental heat and moisture. Additionally, a spring has been set too high, which makes the sliding movement difficult.
