Kohl’s, the retail giant announced its 27 store closures across 15 states across US this weekend. It was in January that the department store first reported that it would close 27 underperforming stores by April. The final day to closure for the underperforming more than 2 dozens stores is fast approaching. The retail store shall also be closing several of its California stores.

Tom Kingsbury, the then Kohl’s chief executive officer said, “We always take these decisions very seriously.” He added, “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Kohl’s locations shutting down after bankruptcy
The department store, Kohl’s filed for bankruptcy in January. At the time, during a press release declared the closure of its stores to happen around April 2025. Kohl’s also thanked its employees for the continued support. Currently, around 1,150 locations around U.S. are operational and most of them shall continue to remain open for now.

Why is Kohl’s stores shutting down?
The Kohl’s store closures come amid declining sales revenue. The sales for Kohl’s was down by 7.2% in the final quarter of 2024, which ultimately led to the decision to shut down the 27 stores across US. Also, the profits are declining drastically by 65.6% from 2023 to 2024 as per the departmental store.
Kohl’s store closures lead to layoffs
Along with Kohl’s store closures at around 27 locations they shall be ending their in-store Amazon return program that was introduced in 2019. With Kohl’s 27 locations shutting down, its laying off about 10% of its workforce across impacted stores. Kohl’s previously said it would offer a severance package or the chance to apply to another open role within the company to impacted employees.
Many retail stores closing
It has been a challenging few years for many retailer as consumers continue to seek out deals online.
In January, Macy’s also announced that it would close more than 60 stores.
Recently, Dollar General confirmed it would close nearly 100 stores.
JOANN and Forever 21 are also going to close all of their locations after filing for bankruptcy.
